Belarus President Aims to Harness Surplus Energy for Bitcoin Mining
This week, Alexander Lukashenko, the President of Belarus, conveyed to Energy Minister Alexei Kushnarenko his intention to leverage the nationโs excess electricity for cryptocurrency mining, including Bitcoin, as a means to build up a financial reserve.
โTake a look at this mining trend. An increasing number of people are approaching me about it. If this is advantageous for us, then we should proceed,โ President Lukashenko remarked. โWe have surplus electricity available. Let them engage in cryptocurrency production and other related activities.โ
President Lukashenko also referenced the United States’ growing embrace of the mining sector, particularly under the leadership of President Donald Trump, who is enhancing the national Bitcoin and cryptocurrency reserves: “You can observe the trend globally. Especially from the largest economy. They announced just yesterday their plans to keep [Bitcoin and cryptocurrency] in a reserve.”
“Thus, there will be a rising demand. Perhaps we should initiate our own efforts,โ Lukashenko continued. โWe can attract various investors, sell them electricity, although I donโt entirely dismiss that option. However, we should take action ourselves. There are existing suggestions on the table. I believe we must surpass the bureaucratic hurdles and identify what steps are necessary.โ
During the previous summer, President Trump welcomed American Bitcoin miners to Mar-a-Lago, seeking insights into the industry to better facilitate their needs if he were to retake the presidency. Since then, he has consistently endorsed the Bitcoin mining sector and advocated for Bitcoin in various aspects, capturing the attention of leaders worldwide, including Lukashenko.
Following President Trump’s suggestion to establish a strategic Bitcoin reserve at The Bitcoin Conference in Nashville last summer, officials across the globe have begun drafting legislation for similar initiatives in their nations and evaluating the practicality of implementing one. Recently, Trump confirmed on his Truth Social platform that a U.S. strategic reserve of Bitcoin will indeed be established.
Today, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick expressed confidence in President Trump’s commitment to advance these initiatives during the White House’s Digital Assets Summit scheduled for this Friday. As President Trump and the United States continue to adopt Bitcoin, nations like Belarus are watching closely, signaling a swift increase in national adoption rates.
