Congressman Ro Khanna Highlights Changing Democratic Attitudes Toward Bitcoin
Congressman Ro Khanna Remarks on Shift in Democratic Attitude Toward Bitcoin

On March 11, 2025, Representative Ro Khanna delivered a concise yet powerful address at the Bitcoin Policy Institute’s Bitcoin for America summit.

“Bitcoin is revolutionizing the financial landscape for countless individuals worldwide,” Khanna asserted during his speech. “This is precisely why the Democratic Party should fully embrace it as a tool for financial empowerment, not just within the United States but globally.”

Khanna has consistently promoted this narrative, urging his fellow Democrats to acknowledge Bitcoin’s potential without fear, likening it to other groundbreaking technological advances, including the internet.

“My objective is to foster a bipartisan approach to Bitcoin,” Khanna expressed in an interview with Bitcoin Magazine. “I aim to persuade Democrats that Bitcoin serves as a next-generation store of value, utilized by millions worldwide. By embracing it, America can connect with these individuals, particularly those who are often marginalized.”

It’s somewhat ironic for a party that champions financial inclusion to overlook Bitcoin—an open-source technology accessible to anyone with an internet connection, and in some circumstances, even without one.

Khanna pointed out that although he stands among a minority of vocal Democrats advocating for Bitcoin, there has been a noteworthy increase in the number of Democratic leaders who have expressed support for this technology over recent years.

“We’ve transitioned from just around 10 lawmakers endorsing Bitcoin and cryptocurrency to nearly 70 or 80,” Khanna stated. “The progress is gradual.”

While some critics argue that the Democratic Party’s historical opposition to Bitcoin stems from ill intentions, Khanna believes the primary issue lies in a fundamental lack of understanding regarding Bitcoin’s purpose and applications.

“Many Democratic officials are unaware of how Bitcoin can facilitate remittances or be of assistance to those lacking access to U.S. dollars,” the congressman mentioned. “Around the world, numerous individuals rely on it for these reasons,” he added, hinting that this aspect might be unfamiliar to many, even within his party.

The Bitcoin and Crypto Voting Bloc in U.S. Swing States

Research from Coinbase highlights that in the recent U.S. presidential election, the number of crypto holders in swing states was approximately tenfold larger than the vote margin between Biden and Trump in 2020.

Since Harris lost to Trump across these crucial states, there’s speculation that the turnout of the Bitcoin and crypto voting demographic may have significantly influenced the election outcome in favor of Trump.

While Khanna is uncertain about the precise impact this voting bloc had on the election results, he concurs that it was likely among the numerous factors that contributed to the election’s outcome.

“I believe it made an impact,” Khanna remarked. “In such a tightly contested election, every vote counts, and the perception that some Democrats alienated Bitcoin and crypto supporters did not help matters.”

Khanna’s recognition of this trend is reflected by others as well.

In December 2024, during the New York Times DealBook Summit, Van Jones—a political analyst and influential voice within the Democratic party—asserted that the Democratic party’s exclusion of pro-Bitcoin and pro-crypto voters was detrimental to its success.

Khanna praised Jones, emphasizing the importance of hearing more voices like his within the Democratic ranks championing Bitcoin.

“I have great admiration for Van Jones,” Khanna said. “His background in the Bay Area provides him insight into technology. The party is poised to move toward a more inclusive approach regarding Bitcoin and similar innovations,” he added.

Will President Trump’s Support of Bitcoin Dissuade Democrats from Backing It?

It seems logical for the Democratic Party to reconsider its stance on Bitcoin ahead of the 2026 midterm elections to gain additional seats in the House and Senate. However, given the polarized political atmosphere in the U.S. and the fact that President Trump is a strong advocate for Bitcoin, it may be challenging to see a surge of Democrat supporters rallying behind Bitcoin.

Khanna contends that Democrats should assess Bitcoin independently of party lines and instead focus on its intrinsic value and functionality.

“Politicians have the capability to evaluate Bitcoin based on its merits,” Khanna stated. “Bitcoin is essentially a decentralized digital currency enabling peer-to-peer transactions without intermediaries. People need to learn about Bitcoin and understand it is merely a method of exchange,” he emphasized.

Furthermore, Khanna differentiated between Bitcoin and meme coins, noting that the president’s recent launch of a meme coin ($TRUMP) creates confusion regarding the actual value propositions of crypto assets, including Bitcoin.

“We shouldn’t have elected officials like President Trump promoting meme coins,” Khanna said.

Getting Democrats on the Right Side of History

In an era where many citizens in the U.S. are struggling financially, should Bitcoin have a prominent place in the Democratic agenda, a party historically associated with the interests of the middle and working class?

While Khanna does not necessarily advocate for Bitcoin to take center stage, he believes the party should avoid dismissing the technology.

“There are larger issues at play right now, such as Medicaid cuts, the layoff of veterans, and erratic tariff policies,” Khanna noted.

“Nonetheless, Democrats were on the wrong side of the innovation and Bitcoin discourse in 2022 and 2024. Now, we have an opportunity to align ourselves correctly,” he remarked.

So, how can pro-Bitcoin Democrats influence their party to align with Bitcoin’s forward trajectory?

    Khanna offered some practical advice:

“They should highlight those of us who lead the charge on Bitcoin and cryptocurrency,” he suggested.

“They can also encourage public officials to educate themselves on the subject to avoid being uninformed,” he noted.

“Lastly, they should discuss the significant adoption rates of Bitcoin.”
