Javier Milei’s LibraGate Timeline: A Closer Look at the Debacle

Argentinian economist Javier Milei has been an outspoken critic of the Libra cryptocurrency project, raising concerns about its potential impact on global financial stability. Let’s delve into the timeline of events that led to what Milei has called the “LibraGate Debacle.”

In June 2019, Facebook announced its plans to launch a digital currency called Libra. Milei immediately expressed skepticism, highlighting the risks associated with a private company having so much control over a global currency.

As more details about Libra came to light, Milei continued to voice his concerns, citing issues related to privacy, security, and regulation. He criticized Facebook’s track record on data protection and questioned the company’s ability to manage a currency responsibly.

Milei’s criticisms gained traction as other experts and policymakers also raised red flags about Libra. The project faced regulatory scrutiny from governments around the world, leading to delays and uncertainty.

In October 2019, several key partners, including PayPal, Visa, and Mastercard, withdrew their support for Libra. This move dealt a severe blow to the project and drew even more criticism from Milei, who saw it as a sign of fundamental flaws in Libra’s design and execution.

Despite the setbacks, Facebook pressed on with its plans for Libra, rebranding it as “Diem” in an effort to distance the project from its troubled past. However, Milei remained skeptical, arguing that the core issues with Libra remained unresolved and that the rebranding was a mere facade.

As the debate over Libra/Diem continues, Milei continues to advocate for stricter regulation of private digital currencies and greater transparency in the financial system. He believes that the LibraGate Debacle serves as a cautionary tale about the risks of giving too much power to a single entity in the world of finance.
