Binance France Emails Confirm User Account Closure On Dec. 31

Binance is winding down its France operations, according to multiple reports citing emails sent to users. Customers have been told that their accounts will be closed at the end of the year, with remaining balances subject to monthly maintenance charges if they are not withdrawn in time.

In early November communications, Binance France users were informed that withdrawals must be completed by Nov. 29. Any assets still held on the exchange after that point will begin accruing fees starting Nov. 29, while all accounts are scheduled to close on Dec. 31, 2026.

    Key takeaways

    • Binance France accounts are expected to be closed on Dec. 31, 2026, following user notifications sent in early November.
    • Binance says users must withdraw holdings by Nov. 29 to avoid monthly maintenance fees.
    • For balances that remain after the cutoff, the fee is set at 0.025% per month, with a minimum of 10 USDC.
    • Binance ties the shutdown to the earlier EU regulatory transition period under MiCA, during which it restricted certain services.

France shutdown: closure date and what happens to remaining balances

Reports from Cryptoast and Crypto Briefingโ€”among othersโ€”say Binance sent emails to customers notifying them that their Binance France accounts will close on Dec. 31, 2026. The notifications also warn that if users leave crypto-assets on the platform through the closure date, Binance may treat the account as inactive under its Terms of Use.

According to the language cited by Cryptoast, the email states that leaving assets behind โ€œcan result in the conversion, transfer or other processing of your crypto-assets.โ€ The same message is framed as an โ€œorderly cessation of activities,โ€ and it is presented to users as notice of Binanceโ€™s intention to close accounts.

To reduce the chance of fees, Binanceโ€™s message (as reported) directs users to complete withdrawals by Nov. 29. The reported fee schedule applies monthly to balances that remain on the exchange after that withdrawal deadline, with a maintenance charge equal to 0.025% of the balance and a minimum monthly amount of 10 USDC.

Earlier EU service curbs under MiCA set the stage

The France closure follows a broader pattern of compliance-related changes across the EU. In late June, earlier reporting from Cointelegraph said Binance had notified European Union users that it would limit access to key services after failing to secure Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulatory authorization ahead of a July 1 deadline set for the transition period.

When asked by Cointelegraph on Sunday about the situation, a Binance spokesperson said: โ€œFollowing the end of the MiCA transition period, Binance is progressively restricting certain services for affected users, in line with the schedule previously communicated to them.โ€

The same exchange reportedly did not address whether similar emails had been sent in other EU countries including Spain and Belgium, despite questions about whether the notices were broader than France.

While MiCAโ€™s transition rules were designed to bring more crypto activity under a unified EU framework, exchanges that did not obtain the required authorization faced constraints. Binanceโ€™s response indicates that the company views the restrictions as part of a planned scheduleโ€”one that now appears to culminate, for France users, in account closures and an incentive to withdraw funds.

What this means for users and how to prepare

For affected French customers, the immediate operational takeaway is straightforward: the window to move holdings off Binance is approaching fast, and leaving balances in place may trigger monthly charges. The fee structure reportedโ€”0.025% per month with a 10 USDC minimumโ€”means the cost can quickly exceed the value of small balances, especially for users who might not check their accounts regularly.

Even for users planning longer-term positions, the key risk in this scenario is timeline-driven. The reported language suggests that Binance could process or convert remaining assets after the account closure date, meaning users may not retain full control over how assets are handled if they miss the withdrawal deadlines.

More broadly, the development reinforces a recurring theme in EU crypto compliance: regulatory transitions can translate into abrupt product or access changes once deadlines pass, with account lifecycle actions following later. That pattern is increasingly important for traders and long-term holders alikeโ€”any regulatory-driven reduction in service availability can compress the time available to respond.

Binanceโ€™s EU footprint and the compliance trade-off

Reuters previously reported that Binanceโ€™s global client base includes at least 300 million customers and that the app was downloaded more than 4 million times in the EU last year, according to figures cited in the Reuters piece. Reuters noted that Binance said it would remain active in Europe despite licensing setbacks.

The France closures therefore highlight an asymmetry: even if a platform continues operating at a broader regional level, it may still choose (or be forced) to scale back specific country-level availability. In practice, users in a particular jurisdiction can experience a narrower set of accessโ€”eventually leading to outright account terminationโ€”while the exchange continues to operate elsewhere under different legal or product arrangements.

For investors and builders watching the sector, the main question is how quickly these changes propagate country to country and what remaining services will still be offered as MiCA implementation progresses. With Binance indicating earlier service restrictions and now moving toward full account shutdown for France, readers should closely monitor any communications from exchanges and treat compliance deadlines as operational deadlines rather than theoretical policy milestones.
