Supporters of Ross Ulbricht, the founder of Silk Road, have generously donated over $270,000 in Bitcoin (BTC) to aid his reintegration into society following his presidential pardon. The Free Ross campaign’s wallet has seen significant contributions, including a notable $111,111 from crypto exchange Kraken. Additionally, donations in other cryptocurrencies such as Ether (ETH), Solana (SOL), Cardano (ADA), BNB, and Dogecoin (DOGE) have been received.
Before his release, the Free Ross campaign focused on gathering funds for legal expenses and criminal justice reform. With Ulbricht now free, the allocation of these funds is yet to be clarified.
Ulbricht, originally from Austin, Texas, was arrested in San Francisco in 2013 and later sentenced to life imprisonment without parole in 2015. After serving over 11 years, he was pardoned by U.S. President Donald Trump on January 21. Since his release, Ulbricht has remained out of the public eye, though filmmakers Blake J. Harris and Jonah Tulis have announced plans for a documentary featuring interviews with him, slated for release in 2025.
While much of the cryptocurrency associated with Silk Road has been seized by U.S. authorities, some speculate that Ulbricht may still have access to a portion of these assets. Conor Grogan, a director at Coinbase, suggested that Ulbricht could control up to $47 million in BTC.
The outpouring of support from the crypto community underscores a commitment to assist Ulbricht as he transitions back into everyday life.
