Bitget Seeks Thai Exchange Acquisition Weeks After $388m Hack

Bitget has announced it is exploring an acquisition of Thailand’s GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics as it looks to deepen its presence in Southeast Asia. The deal, if approved and completed, would give Bitget a path to introduce its trading platform to Thai users through a locally licensed exchange operator.

The proposed transaction would be carried out via BTGT Management (Thailand), according to an announcement shared with Cointelegraph. Bitget says it has an interest in BTGT Management (Thailand), but it did not disclose how much or provide financial terms. Completion is targeted for Oct. 31, subject to regulatory approval and other conditions.

    Key takeaways

    • Bitget’s planned acquisition targets Thailand exchange operator GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics, owner/operator of Z.com EX.
    • The transaction would be conducted through BTGT Management (Thailand), in which Bitget says it holds an interest.
    • GMO Internet disclosed the proposed sale in a Sept. 24 filing, with an expected completion date of Oct. 31.
    • The announcement comes weeks after Bitget disclosed a major security incident affecting its hot and warm wallets.
    • Bitget declined to comment on deal size, interest level, and ownership terms, leaving key details unclear.

Why a Thailand deal matters for Bitget’s regional strategy

Bitget’s interest in Thailand appears closely tied to market access. GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics operates Z.com EX, which launched in February 2021, and Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission lists the company among its licensed digital asset exchange operators. By acquiring or gaining control of that entity, Bitget could position itself to offer services under local regulatory structures rather than relying solely on cross-border access.

In the announcement, Bitget CEO Gracy Chen framed the move as a way to establish local operations in “a thriving country,” emphasizing Thailand’s role within the broader Southeast Asia digital asset landscape.

Still, several specifics remain unresolved. Bitget did not clarify the extent of its interest in BTGT Management (Thailand), nor did it outline ownership structure, valuation, or how control would work after completion. That makes it difficult for observers to determine how quickly Bitget’s platform would integrate with Z.com EX, or how management responsibilities would be handled.

Terms and timing: what the filing and announcement say

GMO Internet disclosed the proposed sale to BTGT Management in a Sept. 24 filing, with a planned completion date of Oct. 31. Bitget’s contemporaneous announcement identifies its involvement through its stated interest in BTGT Management (Thailand).

Both disclosures point to a deal timeline that is relatively tight, but completion is not guaranteed. The transaction remains subject to regulatory review and other conditions—an important caveat for investors and industry participants watching for how quickly Bitget can expand compliance-grade operations in a highly regulated region.

Bitget’s refusal to provide deal particulars—such as the size of its interest, the financial terms, and the ultimate ownership arrangement—also means readers will need to wait for further filings or approvals before drawing conclusions about the strategic depth of the investment.

Deal follows Bitget’s recent security incident

The timing of the acquisition plans is notable because Bitget has recently faced a major security event. According to Bitget’s own account of the breach, the Sept. 24 attack involved its hot and warm wallet infrastructure. The company said approximately $388 million was affected after attackers exploited a vulnerability in a third-party security product and then executed fraudulent withdrawal commands.

Bitget also stated that customer account balances were not affected. It further said it completed a phased restoration of withdrawals on Oct. 2, and on Oct. 17 it announced plans to discontinue services for certain users, describing the action as a “one-off exercise.”

While the acquisition is a separate corporate initiative, large-scale expansion following an incident can raise questions about operational resilience. For traders and users, the critical point is whether internal security controls, custody processes, and transaction monitoring will remain consistent as the company’s footprint grows via a licensed local platform.

Regulatory access and the role of licensed operators

Bitget’s terms of use, updated Oct. 16, list Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan among prohibited jurisdictions. Thailand is also listed as a prohibited jurisdiction, even as the company pursues a deal that could involve serving Thai users through an entity that is already licensed by Thailand’s regulator.

This apparent tension suggests Bitget may be aiming to shift from direct or indirect cross-border access to a structure that aligns with local licensing requirements. However, until deal terms are finalized and approvals are secured, it remains uncertain how services would be offered in Thailand and how quickly any new operational setup would begin.

Investors may also watch for how the acquisition affects Bitget’s compliance and risk management posture—especially given that the company’s recent incident centered on third-party infrastructure. As regional operations expand, dependencies on external security components and operational workflows may become even more important to assess.

For now, the most important next steps are regulatory reviews tied to the targeted Oct. 31 completion date and any subsequent disclosures that clarify ownership, control, and integration plans for Z.com EX. With Bitget having recently navigated a substantial wallet incident, market participants should also pay close attention to security updates and customer protection measures as the company moves toward a Thailand-focused expansion.
