Ross is now a free man, and I believe this may be the one positive outcome from the current administration in the broader context. The motivations behind this pardon were mainly political, but I am truly delighted to see Ross with his family and friends again. Regardless of the accusations against him—both those he was charged with and the others—it’s clear that Ross has served more than his fair share of time.
In stark contrast, actual murderers and rapists often serve a fraction of the time imposed on Ross, even after committing multiple crimes. His sentence was steeped in politics and not at all proportional to the offenses he faced. The harshness of his punishment was intended to make a statement.
Moreover, Ross is not the only individual governments have targeted since 2013. The Samourai Wallet team is currently under house arrest while awaiting trial for providing the backend for a fully self-custodial service. Roman Sterlingov is incarcerated for operating a centralized mixer, with no solid evidence beyond questionable blockchain analysis. Developers involved in the Tornado Cash situation are also facing legal battles and potential jail time in several different jurisdictions.
All of these cases far exceed what happened to Ross in legal terms. While Ross’s sentence was already outrageously disproportionate, the legal grounds for these other accusations are nearly nonexistent. Nevertheless, they faced charges and, in some cases, convictions. These individuals remain in prison, just like Ross.
The government is determined to continue setting examples. It does not change the fact that Trump benefits from the unregulated financial opportunities this space offers, nor does it lessen Wall Street and D.C.’s interest in exploiting it. These factors hold no sway.
The individuals in power, who realize they can profit from this emerging economy, are not advocates for privacy, individual sovereignty, or genuinely free markets that do not prioritize corporate interests.
We require tools that genuinely promote these principles, but developing them puts you at risk of becoming a target.
If you truly care about these issues, it’s essential to recognize that this isn’t over. One man who was wrongfully imprisoned is now free, which is a wonderful outcome. He can now reunite with his parents, his wife, and his friends—a priceless milestone.
However, this battle is far from won. While the music played and chairs shifted, the game continues unabated, and we must remain vigilant.
