On May 25th of the previous year, Donald Trump promised to pardon Ross Ulbricht, an early Bitcoin advocate and Silk Road creator, if elected president. Fast forward to today, where Trump is about to assume office, leaving Bitcoin enthusiasts wondering if he will fulfill his promise to free Ross.
It is my strong belief that Trump will honor his commitment and release Ross from prison. The signs point to Trump following through on his word, especially given his continued support for the Bitcoin industry. With everything lining up, it seems likely that Ross will soon regain his freedom.
According to Ross’ X account, managed by his spouse, preparations are being made for his impending release from prison.
“For my last monthly resolution of 2024, I plan to dedicate time daily to study and prepare myself as I anticipate my freedom,” a message shared on Ross’ behalf stated.
Ross has been serving time since 2013 for founding Silk Road, a platform where transactions were conducted using bitcoin. Despite being a non-violent first-time offender, Ross received a harsh sentence of double life plus 40 years without the possibility of parole. His trial did not involve any charges related to physical harm or injury, and no specific victim was named. Although Ross did not directly sell illegal items, his responsibility was tied to the activities of others on Silk Road.
As the time nears for Ross to be released after 12 years, the stage is set for his pardon.
In a letter written to President Biden in 2022, Ross expressed his intentions, emphasizing his libertarian beliefs and asking for a second chance. Despite his plea, President Biden did not grant clemency, leaving the doors open for President Trump to offer Ross a clean slate.
Confident in Trump’s commitment, Ross expressed his gratitude to those who supported Trump and his hopes for a new beginning.
